Garfield County Royalty Tryouts

Order of events

Dress Code: Western Attire (long-sleeved button-down or snap shirt with a collar, tucked in and sleeves rolled down, a belt, clean unripped jeans, cowboy boots, and a cowboy hat)

10:00 am- Welcome Meeting in North Hall (please place your horse, tack, and grooming supplies in your pre-designated area prior to this time)

  • Directly following the welcome meeting, you will have 10 minutes to groom and saddle your horse. Be prepared to speak with the judges about your grooming routine, tack, and about your horse’s maintenance and routines. Once tacked you will be allotted a 10-minute warm up period.

Queen wave evaluation

  • The goal of this exercise is to present your best royalty smile and wave while maintaining speed. To qualify for points, this must be executed in a safe and controlled manner.

Horsemanship pattern evaluation

  • To qualify for points, this exercise must be executed in a safe and controlled manner. The pattern will be released to all contestants by Friday, July 3rd.

Flag carry evaluation

  • To qualify for points, this exercise must be executed in a safe and controlled manner while maintaining a lope (at minimum) on the rail.

30-minute intermission for lunch directly following the conclusion of the flag carry evaluation

Written test

  • Questions on this test may cover knowledge of the Garfield County Fair & Rodeo, the sport of rodeo, the PRCA, CPRA, rodeo queening, agriculture, parts of the horse, parts of the saddle. This test is not timed. If you do not finish your test prior to your interview, you will be granted time to complete your test while the other contestants are completing their interview.

Contestant introduction

  • Each contestant will be allotted one minute to introduce themselves to the judging panel prior to their speech.

Speech

  • Each contestant will be allotted a minimum of one minute and a maximum of three minutes for the speech portion of the contest. The speech topic will be released to all contestants by Friday, July 3rd.

Impromptu Questions

  • Each contestant will be allotted a minimum of one minute and a maximum of three minutes for the impromptu question portion of the contest. The questions will be drawn at random at tryouts.

Interview

  • Each contestant will be allotted a minimum of three minutes and a maximum of eight minutes for the interview portion of the contest. Each contestant will be interviewed individually by the judges. Topics that may be addressed during this time are knowledge of the Garfield County Fair & Rodeo, the sport of rodeo, the PRCA, CPRA, rodeo queening, agriculture, etc.
